Mayhem: Ã?ystein Aarseth (Euronymous), Per Yngve Ohlin

    From Wikipedia:

"Ã?ystein Aarseth (March 22, 1968 - August 10, 1993) Born in Egersund, Norway; was a guitarist for the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem who went by the stage name Euronymous. He was founder and owner of the extreme / black metal label Deathlike Silence Productions, as well as the Oslo specialist record shop Helvete, until his murder by fellow musician Varg Vikernes. By the late 80's Aarseth had steered [Mayhem] towards a satanist stance, and this was to have a profound effect on all of the then-nascent scene members. He became the focal center of the Black Metal Inner Circle. He opposed the teachings of Aleister Crowley and Anton LaVey, instead embracing a form of theistic Satanism as perceived by Christians, deliberately inverting Roman Catholic dogma and fully supporting what was found to be abhorrent and blasphemous: for instance, he was an ardent proponent of sodomy, rape and murder simply because they were "evil" acts (Aarseth used "evil" in an absolute sense.) When Mayhem's vocalist Dead committed suicide in April 1991, Aarseth discovered the corpse and took pictures later used for a bootleg cover, though against Aarseth's wishes. It was widely rumoured that Aarseth consumed portions of Dead's brain, but he dismissed this in an interview, although he claimed he had intended to do so. He was also believed to have made a necklace from fragments of Dead's skull. In a recent interview, Hellhammer claimed the necklace was later stolen on tour. The myth further states that black metal band Marduk still has other smaller pieces. "It" from Abruptum also claims to have fragments.
In 1993, Ã?ystein Aarseth was fatally stabbed by Varg Vikernes, who was going by the stage name "Count Grishnackh" at the time. According to official reports Aarseth received a total of twenty-three wounds: two to the head, five to the neck, and sixteen to the back. According to Vikernes, however, a majority of the wounds resulted from Aarseth allegedly falling on broken glass.
There is much speculation regarding the motive for the murder, but Vikernes has stated that the stabbing was motivated mostly by self-defense.[3] Vikernes is currently serving a 21 year sentence at Tromsø maximum security prison in Norway for the murder of ystein Aarseth."

I really despise this kind of music, could someone explain the attraction and what it means to them and why? However, I always thought this was a tremendously warped story and thought I'd share! Discuss!

Wasn't really into them but some of your harder "death-metal" bands are an aquired taste. Some I like, some I don't. I like Slayer but detest King Diamond, etc.

What it means to me? Hmm, dunno. I just have a very eclectic taste in music. (Hence part of my name) I may throw on Slayer then turn around & put on Elton John.

I've read the story before & I honestly wasn't that interested. Probably b/c I am over the music kills teens message. I know you're saying that but I am weary of that message.

It's a terrible thing, without a doubt. Some people are just stupid.

Oh, I didn't mean it to come across like I was saying that! I remember the Judas Priest/Ozzy mayhem when those kids tried to kill themselves and everyone blamed Ozzy and Judas Priest. Retarded.

The story was strange, I thought, and I agree that some people are just stupid. People like Euronymous and the others, in particular.

Slayer was pretty good, Kind Diamond had the most obnoxious voice in the universe.

I too have a schizoid MP3 playlist. One minute Black Flag, followed by the Band, followed by BB King, followed by Prong. By that time everyone in the car is usually bitching.

I think some people are just mentally fukced up in the head to begin with and I think to a certain degree you are either born a serial killer or you are not. I think some people that already have mental issues might be more likely to have grand illusions of talent or be drawn more to an artistic nature (just a thought).

I like a large variety of music from one end of the spectrum to the other and have been a metal fan for years. But being a death hag with different morbid interests and making jewelry out of your buddies skull is two different things LOL.

LMAO as I throw up a little.

I just don't understand - they take themselves sooooooo seriously. It's funny, I expected him to be a big hulking Kerry King type, or at least James Hetfield. He just looks like a scrawny little punk. A scrawny little punk with his brain hanging out.

It looks to me like he shot himself in the forehead or under the chin, it doesn't look like it was a mouth wound. Anyone know?

I respect Euronymous and Vikernes for what they did for the genre in their day, but that's about it. Euronymous was a douche for what he did, as was Vikernes. Vikernes has made some pretty sweet atmospheric ambient type music under the band name "Burzum".

Regarding what the appeal of the music is....it's tough to answer that question. In my experience, if someone's already got an aversion to the genre, it won't be easy to get them to understand. That may not be the case here, but I don't even really know where to begin. I guess for people who are against organized religion, this type of music relates to them. It's kind of an aural safe haven for the anti-religious, I suppose. I don't really know how to explain it. And then there's just the whole thing about whether or not the sound itself appeals to you. It's pretty damned grating on the ears of many people. I love it, though.

I see. I love, for example, Soufly, but cannot grasp the Northern European black metal sound. It's so harsh. It makes my brain cells hurt, really.

I can get into a little Soulfly once in a while, Nessa. But it's just not my cup of tea. I guess when it comes down to it, music is all about taste. And my taste is definitely not mainstream usually.

I had a funny thought regarding this subject. Think of how ridiculous it would be to hear about this type of murder in another genre of music.

"Lance Bass of the popular boy band N'Sync was arrested this afternoon for brutally stabbing former bandmate JC Chasez to death. The motive remains unclear as of press time. Justin Timberlake could not be reached for comment, but is rumored to have retrieved a goblet of blood from the scene of the crime before police arrived."

I saw some of those death metal bands on "Metal...A headbanger's journey" by Scott Dunn. Good documentary....recommended watching if you are a metal head. Those guys just seemed a bit screwed in the head. I like heavy music....just not that "dark". guess that's a good way to describe it. JMO

It is a great watch. I am a metal head but I'm not so much a fan of Death Metal especially of the Norwegian variety. I did appreciate the comparison to American Death Metal and Norwegian Death Metal; the difference is massive and the backstories are excellent...church burnings, true hard core satanism, murder, suicide, etc.

I'm glad that the church burnings/murders/etc. aren't part of the Norwegian Black Metal community anymore. While they make for interesting stories, subject matter, and drama, the music is able to flourish more now without those things.

Another interesting story: The band Mayhem (who are nothing like they were in the times of the murder and suicide) were performing a concert a few years ago in Norway when their singer lost control of a sheep's head (yeah, a real one) and it flew into the audience, injuring a concertgoer.

    Now that's funny stuff.

I should add that there are bands that are pure noise not every Black Metal band integrates femal vocals into there music which are the ones I like. But to explain the appeal to someone who has an aversion to it is pretty much impossible you just want get it or understand. It would be like someone trying to convince me that rap is good and an art form I just dont get it nor do I understand the appeal

Oy my bad. What's the difference? And what are some of the good black metal bands? I like the female voices so maybe I need to check that out. (Don't suggest Cradle of Filth because Dani Filth's voice makes my skin crawl. It's that vibrato thing. )

Ok, I posted this, pulled it, went back to read again.

About the moving and posing of the death scene of Dead (not to mention the skull stealing, possible brain snacks, and the photo op that presented itself) ....

All that was done prior to 911'ing it?
Seems like Aarseth could have gotten in trouble for that. How can it truly be determined whether it was suicide or murder if the whole scene has been shifted around that way? Anyone get in trouble? I am gonna have to look this up-it's a good one

As a side-note...his brain just GLOPPED out of his skull, didn't it? Glopped and SLID.... Ughh, reminds me of cracking an egg. If ya did it slow.

    Thanks for this Nessa!
Regarding Burzum...be warned that some of his music has been accused of being kind of racist by some people. I haven't personally researched all the lyrics, but that is a common accusation. Varg did get into some Nazi and National Socialist stuff at some points.

Nessa: I like your "Ruffles and a beer" comment better than mine. Definitely LOL-worthy.

Well, Death is characterized by anything from grunting to growling and sometimes squealing vocals, extreme (blood, guts, etc.) lyrics, super-fast riffs and drums.

I don't know a lot about Black metal but, from what I've heard the singing style is different, it's more high pitched... Some of it's melodic (to me). I've heard Violins, Organ, etc. included.

I can name DM bands, lol. But, like I said... I'm not too familiar with Black metal so Adam can probably give you some suggestions.

My curiosity is piqued! Name some bands off for me that you enjoy, I'm always on the hunt for cool new music. I really do like some of everything. You sound like you'd appreciate Glenn Danzig's 'Black Aria' albums, they're deliciously spooky.

Hi Nessa I was born in 77 so I was about 10 when I heard my 1st Celtic Frost music. If I remember correctly the Lp I should say not cd lol was called Pandemonium? My dad would play it over and over again. When he became a Christian I was stunned and horrified when he burned all his music in the back yard fire pit then had the nerve to ask me to do the samething. It was a battle of the wills of huge proporstion. Chistianity is a great religion as long as its not taken into the Christian conspiracy theory bullshit! Thats when they can piss off

My curiosity is piqued! Name some bands off for me that you enjoy, I'm always on the hunt for cool new music. I really do like some of everything. You sound like you'd appreciate Glenn Danzig's 'Black Aria' albums, they're deliciously spooky.
I love Danzig! How the Gods kill just rips it up! Some Black metal groups that I can think of off the top of my head that I listen too if you dont mind me posting on this.
Cradle of filth is my favorite
Parmecium is really good they have a male and female singer
    Dimmu Borgir is fairly decent
    Crimson Moonlight just kicks ass
Frost like ashes is fast becoming one of my favorite bands
Emperor is really good especially there first 2 albums. It all depends tho on how fast you like your music some of these bands even Slayer with there speediest stuff wouldn't be able to keep up although Cradle of filth have gone more gothic metal and slowed it done alot

Black Metal is a fairly broad and general term. Generally, you can count on the music having really fast drums, particularly a lot of blast-beats. The vocals are *usually* higher-pitched and raspier than in death metal. Not too many black metal bands have the low, growling vocals. There is generally a kind of "DIY" attitude in regard to the production values, so the music is pretty lo-fi a lot of times. There are plenty of exceptions to the stuff I mentioned, but those are general ideas. Aside from the actual sound, the subject matter is usually anti-religious. Other subjects covered in the genre can include depression, suicide, death, murder, and all sorts of other uplifting things!

Some of my favorites black metal bands are Emperor, Immortal, Satyricon, *older* Cradle of Filth, Carpathian Forest, and some Dimmu Borgir. Those are the more popular bands in the genre. I like plenty of lesser known black metal bands, and in my opinion, that's where most of the really great stuff is. Underground black metal is a fascination and hobby of mine, and I have a LOT of it. If anyone's interested in some recommendations, I'd be more than happy to share. But it's definitely not going to appeal to most people.

I love Glenn Danzig! And I agree Opeth, How The Gods Kill is a great album... So is his work with Samhain and Misfits.

I'll name some of my favorite albums... Deicide- Deicide or Legion; Entombed- Clandestine; Obituary- Cause of Death; Cannibal Corpse- Tomb of the Mutilated; Death- pretty much anything by them... Scream Bloody Gore, Spiritual Healing, and Human are all great; Early Sepultura; Brujeria, Cancer, Suffocation, Carcass, Atrocity... hah, *breathe breathe*

What other kinds of music do you listen to Nessa? I like Thrash, Industrial, Punk, and a lot of other genres.
