    RIP, Tony.
    I remember the song - it played a lot on the radio one summer when I was a kid - about the same time when "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay" was popular.

    The proper word is "salet." As in "I sure wish I had me a mess of poke salet!" Mama got snake bit picking it at the edge of our little shack when I was a wee lass in red tights and blue dress.

    They probably yankeefied it, so would not scare the rest of the nation.

    Did you grow up in Scotland or did y'all just talk funny for Americans?
    I always called it "poke salad"; not "polk salad" too.

    Huh. I always called it "Poke" too. The vid lists it as, "Polk." Plus, the article does too. Did not notice that.

    It is poke. My grandparents were North Georgia Mountain hillbillies and, yes, they did talk funny.

    Quare = queer
    Frash = fresh
    Poke = bag

    And so on.

    That's just normal English where I'm from - along with words like "over yonder" and "fixin to" and "a mess of" and "yes'm or no'm" and the like.
    I was talking about the "wee lass" part - your grandparents must have been some pretty sophisticated hillbillies to dress you like that and call you "lass".
    I'm suspecting some outside influences were at work there - had they ever traveled to Arkansas? Even to this day, people talk and dress funny over there, shoes and underwear and such.

    Got to see and hang out with him for an evening in a small club in New Orleans - He put on one of the best shows I'd ever seen. Just him with a beat up old guitar, beat up amp, a fuzz pedal and a drummer. Killed the crowd - Everybody just stopped what they were doing and crowded around the stage. He was such a super cool and humble guy.
