There's gonna be hell to pay when they figure out which pilot left the keys in that thing.
I bet he\she just dashed into the lounge for a couple of quick drinks before the next flight thinking it would be fine as they left it.

On another note - it seems that extensive training or experience really aren't that necessary if you want to be a pilot.
    For a little while.

I'm kind of shocked it's that easy to take a plane.
Without anybody to put a stop to it.

It appears that some F-15's were ready to put a stop to it.

It not too unusual for authorized ground crew to know how to start a few things. At one time, I knew how to fire up the APU (Aircraft Power Unit) and ride the brakes when we had more 737's than gates. I sat several times in the Jump Seat when working a charter. Some of the Pilots were pretty fun guys. They would show you everything. Got to sit in the FO's seat a few times. Just sit, don't touch anything kind of thingy. This was in the 80's after I became a Operations Agent.

Would something like this be covered by insurance? It's obviously not a "normal" way to lose a plane.

    Yeah.
He probably had one of those Geico policies that covered whatever he was driving, so it's all good.

I would hope they have some type of insurance to cover this. He was a contract employee, so perhaps they will hold Horizon Air responsible. Security would not have been worried about an authorized employee around a Company Plane. They aircraft have to be cleaned and restocked. ATC might not have reacted that fast thing it was just a repositioning of a plane. I'm sure there are more details to reveal.

With this becoming national news, I’m afraid of copycats. They might not be as, ummm courteous (for lack of a better word) as this guy on where to put the plane down. He had a sense of humor, could hear it in the videos with him in communication. I was confused whether to giggle or feel sorry, but some of the video comments glorify the guy, which is scary.

I was at SWA, contracting out labor was always one of our Unions big concerns. One of the counter points we used was the safety factor. The more you contract, and sub-contract out, the less give a shit about the main airline happens.

I'm not sure I would call this a joyride.

Colton Harris Moore stole I think three airplanes all without knowing how to fly one so it must not be too difficult.

I'm just a couple of hours shy of a license.
Taking off and flying around is pretty easy, the landing part can be a bit more challenging.

Yeah, I wasn't clear.......stealing one must not be too hard. Even Moore found out they don't land as easy as they take off.
