Reading through this thread it is amazing how people miss the fundamental point about Jim Jones and the People's Temple despite all the evidence staring them in the face.

Jim Jones was NOT a religious man. He was an atheist and a communist who sought to infiltrate the church in order to destroy it (he stated this). He and his "church" were aligned with the San Francisco Bay Area's liberal establishment (the kind of people who support Obama). People's Temple members were paid to boost the numbers at public demonstrations and meetings. The tragedy might have been headed off except that the establishment liberal media refused to criticize Jones and the Temple (they even gave Jones a pass after he was arrested by vice cops for soliciting sex in a public restroom).

Jones picked Guyana because he couldn't get into Cuba and Guyana was a socialist country. The book Raven: The Untold Story of Reverend Jim Jones and His People notes that Jonestown was a perfect socialist state in miniature.

David Koresh and the Branch Davidians should never be compared to Jones and Jonestown, there is simply no correlation. Waco was a crime by the Clinton Administration. The lesson of the Branch Davidians at Waco is to fear the power of the state and fear people like Jim Jones who want to empower the state with themselves as the embodiment of it.

That is correct. Jim Jones was not a religious man HOWEVER he used religion to gain control and to gain members of his group at the beginning. Later he used religion to hide his true agenda from government and to remain exempt from tax and law and to confuse. He moved to San Francisco and later to Guyana very much on purpose for the very reasons you mentioned above

Linking Obama supporters with members of the Peoples Temple is a bit of a stretch...I really can't buy into that. But thanks for your post...and opinions. Happy New Year, Sea & Friends

Re: Jonestown, from a book I own, "Killer Cults" by James J. Boyle, copyright 1995:

"Beatings with fists and straps were routinely administered. Another form of punishment was a 'stretching', in which four camp guards would grab a miscreant by each leg and arm and pull until unconsciousness arrived. Female offenders were beaten and then forced to strip and stand naked in public, or engage in oral sex in front of the congregation. If a married couple was discovered in private conversation, the woman-or the couple's teenage daughter, if they had one-could be forced to masturbate in front of the group."

I just watched the PBS home video: Jonestown The Life and Death of Peoples Temple.
Jones makes me sick. It is so hard to fathom these people picking up and moving and leaving their family behind. The end was really hard to watch, with the survivors talking about how their kids or wife died in their arms.

    Monkey Sales?

Newsweek online claims "Before moving to Guyana to establish Jonestown.... Rev Jim Jones raised funds for his People's Temple with door-to-door monkey sales. (from slide 4 of Criminals & their pets at http://www.newsweek.com/id/170850 )

Sounds insane to me if it is true.

Sounds like Jones had a penchant for doing things backwards. The more I hear about him (and yes, even after all of these years the info just continues to surface) the more crazed he appears to have been. He was right though; he wouldn't be forgotten and his crazed antics ensured that.

yes, he did sell monkeys. There was speculation that his source for the primates was a research lab....so who knows what those animals had been exposed to before becoming pets.

Also, he had a Chimp named Mr Muggs that they took down to Jonestown. On Nov 18 he was shot twice while in his pen. The reports were that he died slowly as he was still alive when the first outside troops got into Jonestown a day or two later.

There is another story about Mr Muggs body being put into a body bag and coffin by US troops and shipped to the base in Delaware with the rest of the bodies just to freak out the medical examiners

I am doing a sociology research paper for one of my classes in college. I've chosen to do the paper on The Jonestown tragedy. I really don't have time to go through all these pages to get good articles and books on it so can someone list some good books or articles, internet sites for me to get information? I would appreciate it. You can PM me if you like.

That would be a very interesting subject for Sociologists. That and Charles Manson. I did my research paper for anthropology on the Shakers. Hope you get an "a", it will be an enlightening research.

Wonder if Jim Jones sodomized any of those monkeys he sold...like he did most of the Peoples Temple members...

Wonder if Mister Muggs suffered any abuse?...outside of being murdered...

A door to door monkey salesman? That's a new one. Whenever I hear about some guy claiming to be God or Jesus or whatever, I always think of Chris Rock's joke about David Koresh (sp?). He said something to the effect of he knew Koresh wasn't Jesus because he wore glasses. Jesus, being a perfect man wouldn't have an astigmatism and have to go to Lens Crafters. Totally stupid (and hilarious), but Rock did have a point.

The MSNBC special was really good. The one woman made a really
interesting point. When they call it a cult, you lose sight of the fact
that these are real people, not just corpses. I think the show did a
great job in humanizing the followers. Very sad.

I am still looking for the grave of Jim's wife-Marcy. I found out from a friend that she does have a gravestone. It is not under the name Jones-it is under her maiden name.
Turns out that a couple of guys in the high school grade below me are related to Jim Jones also. One of the relative of Jim (or wife-can't recall) showed up at a function years ago drunk.
Turned out the relative turned to drinking because the person was having major problems dealing with Jonestown and the deaths.
That is pretty much what I know right now.

(from above article. god, this makes me sad.)

People made jokes about the ??Kool-Aid drinkers? as if there really was no more to the story than a bunch of really stupid, worthless people who followed a delusional madman into a murderous pact. But there were bent and broken syringes, showing signs of struggle. Reports of parents screaming, children screaming, and being forced to swallow. Tiny teeth marks on plastic syringes tell a story very few people had the heart or mind to tell.

They took the children first. 287 of them. Agents of Jones, for the most part, led them; a few parents. They led them to the podium like little lambs ?? and lions ?? to slaughter. It was a coldly calculated move, designed to make the bereaved parents easier to manage, more willing to let themselves be killed.

The dead and dying were placed out of sight, to painfully convulse to their deaths under the warm Guyana sun. They say it took about five minutes for their hearts, even the tiniest, to stop beating.

I was told that it was quite awhile before they put gravestones on Marcy and her children's graves. I haven't been able to check up on this yet. At least I have a clue of the name and the area where they supposedly are buried.
I plan on getting pictures to put here. I just thought people might want to see them. Not be disrespectful of the dead of course.

Love, direction, needing to find out why we are here and what our meaning is. I don't think these people were crazy. I believe at first they really believed that this was a great place with other great people. By the time they realized things were not as they seemed they were thousands of miles away in a jungle with a militia of men with guns.

It's kinda like an abusive relationship. It doesn't start off that way and by the time you get hit it's tough to just walk away.

You are probably right. I always think I'd never get involved with something or someone like that (depending on what we're talking about at the moment) but I guess it could really happen to anyone.
