Thread: Richard Nixon

Everybody in my family was blue collar Democrats and I grew up thinking that Nixon was the spawn of Satan. So he lied. So did LBJ. So did Bush and Cheney. Clinton cheated because he could.
Gee I could use some heroes!
When I was a young death hag, I paid my first recreational visit to a cemetery (Rose Hills in Whittier) and visited the Nixons buried there. Dick and Pat are over in Yorba Linda though.

Wow, Fanny, what a great photo find! You only ever see the one of him and Elvis.

I wish I knew what my parents thought. They never discussed politics and were very secretive about their vote. They did, however, dislike the goddamn hippies so I assume they voted for Nixon.

My Mother still gets into heated arguements and swears Nixon did nothing wrong. She worked for his campaign in the 1972 election. She cried during his resignation speech

I'm a democrat and although I don't like the fact that he covered up the Watergate break-in's I do have to acknowledge the fact that he did get us out of Vietnam and he did sign the S.A.L.T. 1 treaty agreements with the Soviet Union and he also started the E.P.A. and opened up talks with Red China who we hadn't talked to since 1949. He would have gone down as a great president if not for the cover up's.

Do you guys remember how utterly reviled Nixon was after Watergate? At least in the media as I perceived it then. It was a very dark and depressing time for our country.

Is it possible that Nixon was so despised that it's now come full circle, and it's kinda ok, if not actually cool, to like him? Those things happen.

In the end, Nixon was probably no better and no worse than of the other presidents throughout history. He just happened to get caught.

I remember seeing pictures of him after Pat died and he looked like a sad, broken old man. It makes me kind of sad that he probably only found some measure of peace with his death.

I think history (and time) has a way of letting the emotions of the moment subside and the facts emerge.

Hell, then he might get a clue about what concerns the average citizen, not just the super rich and political action committees. lol

Yeah, death can be the best PR move.

I read recently that Tricia and Julie--those ladylike sisters--were battling each other over something to do with Nixon Library. I think they've made up, but they didn't speak for a while.

I remember those White House weddings. They were fun.

I just finished reading this book. I didn't know much about him other than the little I knew about Watergate, but after reading this it is ASTOUNDING to me that this man was able to become President. Taking millions of dollars from dictators, mobsters, etc - trying to thwart the Vietnam peace talks when LBJ was in office - illegally obtaining tax returns of his enemies - this guy was UNREAL. Highly suggested reading!

Truth be told, Nixon was emblematic of the U.S. in his time. If you want to know the character and personality of our nation at that time, just look at Nixon.

I remember when Nixon died, and all the eulogies referred to him as this honorable elder statesman. I remember thinking, "buh? I thought we hated this guy? What happened to all that? No more tricky Dicky?"

I think he was still considered an asshole when I was in school, and I hadn't come across anything since exonerating him. Probably because I spend all my time here--but look! now I'm getting an education! So that makes FAD a good place to hang out. *whew!*

    Agreed.

Then there would be the Clinton "porn" tapes; blowjobs in the Oval Office... but he wasn't likely the first and only; just the first to be caught.

Nixon was known as Tricky Dick ... resigned rather than face impeachment.

Price freezes, and inflated mortgage rates, difficult time in American history.

Great post...I think it shows the complexity of the Presidency as well as the need for even-tempered men or women to occupy that office. Presidents may be called to do things that are quite heroic yet brutal at times...

My mother thought Clinton was God. Seriously. And don't dare dis him in front of her. It was because, she said, he forced the drug companies to create those discount prescription cards that enabled her to better afford her ton of meds, which were instantly washed out of her system by a case a day Bud habit.

I can't say I'm a fan of Nixon's politics but, if you look back at history, he committed fewer crimes than his more beloved predecessors.

FDR was a fascist crook who put thousands of innocent Americans in internment camps. He wiretapped his enemies, shut down newspapers and organizations that opposed him, slandered most anyone who crossed him and allowed his administration to become a nest of spys, yet we build monuments to him.

JFK's presidentcy was a failure, he used daddy's mob connections to get elected, had a second-rate intellect and he would bang a woodpile on the odd chance there was something female in it, yet he's hailed for his style and sophistication.

Nixon's real crime was his exposure of Alger Hiss as a Soviet agent. The Hiss case stripped American liberalism naked and the establishment never forgave Nixon for it. It wasn't Watergate, hell, we have a dozen Watergates a year that never see the light of day. it was the Hiss case.

Had he not lied and tried to cover up watergate , Nixon would have been reguarded as the best president in modern times. As a president he was great. I think his ego made him self destruct.

He made a promise to south vietnam that america would stay with the war if it was aparent the south was losing in early 1974, by august Nixon quit as president and thr south was again losing the war. Ford didnt keep Nixons promise and the south ended up losing to the north. People think Nixon got us out of Vietnam but he didnt. Congress pulled the plug on the war, they just quit funding it and that doomed south Vietnam. Still as far as a president Nixon was one of the greats.

    1972 Election

In 1972, my father took me into the voting booth with him, and he said, "See that? I just voted against the president."

I am a Reagan Hater from a family of Nixon Haters.

But I still think that Nixon was a good president. Only Nixon could go to China.
