    Mass Shooting @Batman Opening

Still not much reported yet, but looks like there's been a shooting at a Batman premier in Colorado.

At least 12 moviegoers were reportedly killed and 20 injured at a cinema in the Colorado city of Aurora in the Denver suburbs. They were attending a midnight showing of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

    ...

Local media reports that two gunmen were involved in the rampage. An explosive device was set off during the shooting, injuring several people.

Witnesses said the gunmen were probably wearing body armor and gas masks and used some kind of a tear gas bomb in the attack.

Some reports say police have apprehended one of the assailants while the second one is still at large.

I just turned it on Fox News. Only newschannel number I know offhand. This is terrible. Just heard an infant was killed.

    I want to cry.

On the front page of cnn.com, it's saying 14 dead and 50 injured, but if you click on the link it just indicates 20 people have been injured. I guess this is the classic "developing story" at this point. Regardless, very sad.

    Yeah, it's still developing.

I'm childfree (don't want kids) and I don't hate kids. But, the story about the infant being killed at point blank range has me sobbing. Just sobbing.

I fell asleep early and woke up early and just now found out about this mass murder! Poor families!
Probably youngsters (teens and young adults) mainly there. They seem the most interested in these films to me.
My nephews and nieces went to the Batman premier in Hollywood last night. I hope they are safe.
    What a monster.

My cousin lives in Aurora, Colorado not far from this theatre ( less than a mile ), actually some years back the two of us had seen The Simpsons Movie at this very same place. Called her up a few hours ago knowing she would still be up to tell her what had happened only to get "..oh come on...this is bullshit..what a sick joke". Told her I had seen this on Denver's 9 News site. She said "so what...channel 9 lies all the damn time" then she hangs up. Here she is less than a mile away from the crime scene and she refuses to believe what happened. I am waiting for her to call me back to say...well never mind.

wow, the gunman had to be planning this for a while..although he didn't have much of a get-away plan.
I saw a 6yr old was reported as one injured, but on skynews I did see a 3month old was hit in the back. I haven't seen anything else on the baby's condition.
    14, dead...at a movie theater...
I wonder what race the shooter is, bc that is how the media frightens us of foreigners. There are whacked out people of all races and religions.
I don't even want to know the motive. sick bastard.

There are different reports on the # injured, bc a lot were taken to different hospitals. I tried to tally them, it seems more around 20, then 50.

Why would you take a 6 year old to a movie like this to start with? It's really none of my business what others allow their kids to see but I still find myself asking this question.

No, that is NOT to say they are to blame for what happened but one has to ask how much of this is interrelated. When I was 6 kids wouldn't have been allowed anywhere near something as violent as Batman movies or even their equivalent of the day.

    Just wondering to myself........

Ho lee crap. At least the guy didn't kill himself (yet); maybe we'll find out what the hell his problem is. Of course, that's as long as he doesn't get off by reason of insanity; then they can hand him the bedsheet (to hang himself with).

Yeah, I freaked out when Bambi's mother was shot, when I was 5. I was never allowed to watch R-rated movies, as a kid or a tween. I snuck them as a teen.
Parents are our age now, imo we've become desensitized to violence, on-screen. Now it being real-life... that's what nightmares are made of.

O John, you and I must be of the same generation. It's a whole new world - a couple of my grandkids (15 and 11) have been raised on violent videogames and movies. They have no problem at all going into gory detail about heads getting blown off, gore, etc. And it has been that way since the 14 yo was much younger. I have always been appalled by it. There seem to be very few parents that have any compunction about letting young kids sit through any kind of violence, sexual situation or foul language. I'm really only a stepgrandma, so I can honestly say I didn't raise them that way.

It won't surprise me if somehow that plays into this situation - the stupid guy has nothing to do but sit around playing these games, so thought he'd make a 3D version.

My mother didn't let me watch "Twilight Zone" on TV... when I was in fifth grade! Now I'm dating myself. :-) This story is horrible. Last night my husband and I were in a mall here in Annopolis MD - we're on vacation. Lots of tweeners and teens were wandering the mall dressed as various super heros/villians. Mostly Batman related, but not all. We realized the cinema in that mall was having a midnight showing, and it looked like the kids were getting into it and ready to have a good time. That such innocent fun could become a living nightmare is so sad. I am so sad. You can only say, and think, and type, "What is this world coming to?" so often - and it loses its meaning, becoming so cliche, BUT, what else can you say?

No information on the shooter. The name he gave police isn't checking out. He had Tennessee plates on his car, but supposedly was living in the area.

I was watching Today, and Matt Lauer said something that caught my attention. He said the shooter is 24 years old, still unidentified, but "in the country legally".

    hmmmm....

They said on Today that his name was James (something another...I missed the last name)

You're on Central Time right, Havoc? So, you're probably an hour behind on the Today show.

I'm 24 as well . It makes me freaked out that someone my age could go and do something this heartless and brutal.

We've finally got a little something on the shooter.

    http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/aurora...ry?id=16818889

The young man who is in custody after allegedly gunning down 12 people in a mass shooting spree overnight in Aurora, Colorado has been identified as local resident James Holmes, according to federal authorities.

    ...

A San Diego woman who identified herself as James Holmes' mother told ABC News she had awoken unaware of the shooting and had not yet been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado."
I'm curious to find out more. I did a google search and found a profile for Jim Holmes in Aurora on a Tea Party site, but there's not much for details, so it could just be another random person.

This isn't far from me, and I have a young friend who was working at the theater during all this. She seems pretty shaken up, as anyone would be, but she is physically safe.

I can't even imagine. I spend a lot of time thinking about people and what makes them tick, and in some cases I can just never understand....

Total final destination thing here. This woman who was murdered at the movie last night, was almost shot last month at the mall shooting in Canada.

She begged her BF to go with her last night and she won the argument with him. And, ultimately. That cost her her life. Freaky.

UPDATE: 13th victim just died. She was a six year old girl.

What the Sam Hill is wrong with society now days. Killing children. Damnation.

Am a little surprised that he didn't shoot himself- Anders Brevik springs to mind. Is he doing it for notoriety? Some skewed political leanings? Weird to hear of death threats on Rotten Tomatoes for people slating the film, then to hear of this.....

Some people are already politicizing the tragedy. I knew it wouldn't take long. ABC news anchor Brian Ross alluded that the shooter may have tea party ties. Now they are apologizing. This country is fucked.

Funny the first post reports there were 2 gunmen but now its just this guy. Kinda like Columbine initial reports said there were at least 5 gunmen but the "official" story is just the 2 kids.

100% agree. I have my pistol permit, but it is almost worthless because you can't carry in any buildings. What about our rights to protect ourselves from crazy people who break the law? If one person had a gun chances are he would have been stopped and save the tax payers a lot of money.

    Came across this:
A few weeks ago, a man by the username of ‘JamesHolmes154′ posted a thread on 9gag saying he was going to ‘shoot up’ a theater. He was clearly distressed and admitted? he was suffering from PTSD. He said he was going to walk in and try to take as much lifes as possible. The whole 9gag community egged him on and give him tips on what to wear, etc. They give him tips on sharp-shooting and sent him messages on how to take as much lifes as possible. 9gag is a sick site and needs to be destroyed.
