I completely back Duster up on this one. Canada is very sensitive about people taking Canadian jobs and they should be. Frankly, if the US did not do all this outsourcing, then our jobless situation wouldn't be so bad as it is right now. When we went to Canada for my husband's job, we were really grilled at customs as we drove in (yeah, we drove from NE Oklahoma to Toronto which is another story). We should have just said we were going on vacation (which we were, Canada was part of the working vacation) and we wouldn't have had such a hard time with customs. She asked, "Why is your company coming in for work, why can't Canadians do it?" My husband didn't make it clear that his company was coming in as customers. She probably wouldn't have given us such a hard time. She did eventually let us in and we really did enjoy our time in Canada in the Toronto area. When he had to go back to Canada a few months later, he was going for two weeks and the last week fell on our wedding anniversary, so he had our daughter and me fly up for the last week. I had a much easier time going through customs as I explained that my daughter and I were visiting my husband, who was a customer in Canada and things went relatively smoothly through customs.

Another thing Duster mentioned which I believe leads to Maura not being in Canada is that Canada does not just wave you through. All the customs people we encountered with all the trips into Canada were very thorough. In fact, I love that Canada is very strict on a mom traveling singly with a small child (our daughter was 15 month old at the time), which makes it difficult for someone to abduct a child from a divorce situation and leave to go into Canada. We had to have notarized statements from my husband that it was OK for me to come in and leave early if I needed to leave without him. We found them very stringent (which is a good thing) and I'm sure they'd be on the lookout for a description of Maura Murray coming across the Canadian border.

She'd also need a passport to cross the border, which would identify her right away as the missing MA woman.

It makes sense that times have changed, regarding the level of difficulty in crossing from the US into Canada. Growing up in the 70's, I remember it was extremely casual (as opposed to the return crossing back into the US). I remember the border security personnel joking with my father, never looking in the trunk, me lying asleep and undisturbed in the back seat. Perhaps we were treated differently because our car was a beat-up Gremlin.

Yep - we used to go to the US routinely (later bar hours, plus all the cool low-tax stuff you could get there) and it was almost as easy as crossing the border between provinces. You could do it without any ID at all. And I agree - we only ever had any trouble when we were crossing back home. The US border guards were great - the Canadian guards often treated us like shit. Perhaps because they could, without creating an international incident ).

Anyway, after 9/11 EVERYTHING changed. Now every traveller is watched very, very carefully and and you need serious documentation.
That's why it's tough to believe that a missing woman - especially from the northern US, where guards on both sides of the border would be on the lookout - could slip across.

I learned about the case yesterday morning on "Disappeared." Since then, I cannot stop thinking about it. I wondered to myself yesterday, "Why?" Why can't I get this out of my head? I watch these shows all the time on ID. I absolutely love that channel. These things never stick with me. I watch one, say "Oh, how sad." and move on. This one I can't shake. I'm not completely sure why. A couple of my thoughts as to why are these:

    1. I may have seen her somewhere. I can't remember where. I don't remember. I just thought she looked really familiar as I was watching the show.
    2. I don't claim to be a "psychic." However, I do believe that everyone has a certain amount of that sixth sense in them. In the past, I have had dreams, and soon after, portions of them seem to come true. For example, a few years ago (early 2008, I believe), I had a dream about a shooting. The next day, I woke with an eerie feeling in the pit of my stomach that I couldn't get rid of. No, it wasn't something I ate. That day there -was- a shooting at the Von Maur at a mall in Omaha, Nebraska. I repeat.. I am not a psychic psychic, but that feeling that was in the pit of my stomach that day has been there ever since I watched that episode of Disappeared. I can't shake it. I doubt I will until this is solved. Someday it will be. I hope that it's in my lifetime. I do think that she wanted to get away for awhile. I really feel that she just felt she needed some time alone. I don't believe she was going to commit suicide. I don't really believe about her having another boyfriend. While I don't feel that she's necessarily dead, she is -obviously- in great danger, and even if found, she's not going to be the Maura people used to know. The whole case seems to stink. Like another post read, I think there is a local involved, although no one near there wants that. Maybe even someone with some power.

I know that most people who read this post will take me as some phony, and everyone has the right to their own opinion. I, however, just felt like I had to get this out there to others who are interested in the case. I hope the updates keep coming. I feel so very connected to this case and I truly hope to see her found someday, dead or alive, so that those who love her can at least find some closure.

I just read a Wikipedia thingy about MM.

She was upset about something (possibly wrecking her dad's car?). Also, cops found a rag stuffed in the tail pipe of her car. It's pretty clear that she killed herself. I think she just decided to do it in a remote place.

I love this case, because they're are so many scenarios of what could've happened and all have valid points, as well as, holes in the theory. I think any information from Fred Murray, is somewhat biased and information regarding Maura, is often omitted. From his point of view she comes across as the all american girl, when in reality she had a lot of issues taking place in her life. I believe that James Renner, is completing a more accurate picture of Maura's, life.

    1. she didn't just leave West Point, because she wanted to. Apparently, there were some code of conduct violations and she chose to leave before any action could be taken against her. There have been people that have speculated alcohol was involved, as well as, credit card fraud which was continued at UMass.

    2. It is a fact that she was caught fraudulently using a credit card in November, of 2003, while at UMass. James Renner, found the incident report which can be read here https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7_a...EzbXRCUDg/edit. Her name has been redacted from the report, but there is a picture of her that was taken by the police. This had the possibility of putting her nursing degree at risk.

    3. It appears as if her bf had cheated on her, and that she had cheated on him. She also wasn't looking forward to moving to Oklahoma. The relationship issues were mentioned by her bf's mom, as well as, Maura's aunt.

Alot of people find this part of the story to be somewhat strange. She did attend a party, left about 2:30AM and went to drop off the car at her Dad's motel. It's the time people find a bit odd. Why not just drop the car off in the early AM rather than the middle of the night. In a way she was somewhat lucky that her drinking wasn't mentioned in the police report.

On Monday evening of February 9, 2004, after driving 144 miles North to a destination unknown, Maura gets into a second one-car accident. A nearby resident offers Maura help, but she declines--requesting he not call 911. Police arrive less than 10 minutes later, but Maura is gone. The car doors are locked and her cell phone and credit cards are missing, but the rest of her belongings are left in the car.
It's reasonable that she'd take her cell phone and credit cards and leave everything else behind if she was going for help or if someone picked her up. I don't think she wanted police called, because it's suspected that she had been drinking and any dwi would've put her nursing degree in serious jeopardy. A dwi along with the credit card fraud she would've likely been expelled. The police arrived approx 7 - 10 minutes after she spoke to the bus driver. I believe it's highly unlikely that she was abducted in that time frame. I think, it's more likely she took off running and with the cold weather, and the alcohol she had consumed became hypothermic which causes confusion and went into the woods where she died. She was a cross country runner and probably could've got reasonably far in the 7-10 minutes before the police arrived.

An additional piece of information that is extremely interesting is a call that Maura received while working at UMass Student Security. She received the call at 1:00 am on February 10th, and she was so upset she had to be escorted back to her dorm by a supervisor. Who was that call from? What was it about? Why didn't Maura tell anyone why she was so upset?
This actually occurred Thursday, February 5. The call took place around 10PM or slightly after. James Renner, spoke to her supervisor Karen Mayotte, who was advised by others that Maura, was upset. She went to check on her around 10:30PM - 10:40PM, asked what was wrong, and she broke down crying. After a few minutes said, "my sister". The call was to her sister and apparently they discussed relationship issues that were taking place between her sister and her sister's bf. Her supervisor signed her out because she was in no condition to do her job, and later that evening around 1:15AM walked her back to her dorm room.

In addition to the strange sightings, 36 hours after her mysterious crash, Maura's boyfriend received a call from an unregistered, prepaid cell phone--which Maura frequently used throughout the time he knew her. He wasn't able to answer the call at the time, but he is sure that the eerie voicemail that was left must be from Maura. There are no words spoken on the recording, just the sound of a woman shivering and sobbing.
He did receive a call, but it was determined to have come from the Red Cross, and not Maura. He was in the military and the Red Cross helped facilitate his leave.

Internet searches from the days leading up to her disappearance suggest that Maura may have been planning to take a trip North. She had inquired about lodgings in both Vermont and New Hampshire, places she had vacationed often as a child. Her distressed mental state and the discovery of the book "Not Without Peril" (a collection of hiking stories, many featuring avid climbers and hikers who have gone into the wood to die) in her wrecked car have convinced most police that Maura was suicidal and intended to travel to NH to kill herself.
According to the police she was searching for places to stay late Sunday, night and stopped working on the computer around 4AM on Monday, morning. She made calls that Monday, early afternoon. James Renner, also uncovered that she had done internet searches for alcohol effects on fetuses. They found a box on her bed with her packed belongings. There was a printed out email from her bf to her that apparently discussed his cheating. She had also taken down pictures from her wall.

There are tons of new leads popping up all of the time. In September of this year a blogger interested in the case who worked at a bank looked up financial records for "Maura Murray". There were several, but one name in particular had the same birthdate as the missing Maura Murray, and the account was open and active in New Hampshire.
The guy from the bank sent this info to James Renner. Several people that follow his blog have pointed out this is probably nothing. There would be no reason to close her account since she is not declared deceased, but missing. Her father is the registered owner of the car (if I recall correctly) and as long as money is being deposited into her account by anyone it would remain active and current on the loan.

And THIS February another fanatic follower of the case happened to notice that a woman running a site about Maura Murray had a contact/business associate listed on her facebook page named--you guessed it, Maura Murray, same age as the missing woman. This Maura Murray worked at a Curves in Toronto, which is interesting because Maura apparently had some kind of tie to the Curves in Amherst.
Also from James Renners' blog. There is a facebook page for Maura Murray, and the administrator is Helena Dwyer - Murray. Maura, did have some sort of ties to Curves in Amherst, but it could've been a place where she worked out and not necessarily an employee.

When the woman called the location in Toronto about Maura, the phone was given to a young woman who asked what she needed to talk to Maura about. The blogger replied she had a question about UMass. The woman said nothing else but handed the phone to a man who identified himself as John Renner. He said there was no Maura here, the woman was mistaken.
It was James Renner, that called the Curves in Toronto. It turned out to be nothing. It's somewhat confusing... Here's the link to it..http://mauramurray.blogspot.com/2012...a-manages.html

But I think someone mentioned Petrit Vasi? He IS a real person and he really was struck by a driver near UMass. Many people, police included I guess, have speculated that the incidents were connected, but no evidence proving that has turned up. I think it's a really intriguing theory.

There is a Petrit Vasi, and he was involved in an accident. He doesn't recall whether it was struck by a car or if he fell out of a car, regardless he was seriously injured. The accident took place at 12:20AM (Friday, Feb 6). This was the night of Maura's, breakdown at work. Her Supervisor escorted Maura, back to her dorm around 1:15AM.

James Renner's blog is at http://mauramurray.blogspot.com/ There's lots of information, as well as, documents that are posted.

Whenever this thread gets bumped, I always hope for new information.

seberly - I agree with you that Maura was probably not abducted, but that she likely ran from the car crash, became hypothermic and disoriented, and huddled in somewhere (a location that may never be found), ending up dead. Very sad, no matter what. I theorize that even though some factors might lead some to presume suicide (e.g. recusing herself from West Point, criminal activity, being distraught over her sister's phone call, drinking), Maura didn't actually plan to kill herself. I think she tried to get far away. Almost every American could probably find a somewhat secluded place to commit suicide within 5-10 miles of their home, if they so chose. Unless the person would want to commit suicide and yet never be found. This would inflict great pain on the surviving loved ones, so I doubt this scenario.

I do hope that a hiker, passing dog, someone/something causes the discovery of her body, so the mystery can be solved, she can be properly laid to rest, and her family can have that closure. My heart goes out to her father, who seems to keep his eye out for her every day and night. I can't imagine that pain.

I'm undecided on this case - have read extensively and followed Renners' blog (where he recently has posted some conclusions.) The single most perplexing thing to me is that rag in the tailpipe. It makes no sense no matter in any of the scenarios.

I just watched her Disappeared episode on Netflix.

I believe that Maura is dead. I do not know if she took her own life, succumbed to the weather, or was abducted, but I believe that she is no longer alive.

I do not believe that her father has anything to do with her disappearance. Someone asked about her mother, she is deceased. She died a few years ago, on Mauras birthday coincidentally. She was divorced from Mauras father at the time of the disappearance. Maura had two sisters, they have gone on with their lives, but remain close to their father. Fred Murray has been relentless in his search for the last 9 (almost 10) years. He has filed a lawsuit against the NH State police. He is 70 years old now, his age showing.

Here is a great article about Fred as well as Maura and the disappearance from March of this year (2013)
    http://www.concordmonitor.com/news/l...r-his-daughter

I think most of what is on the net is speculation. I do not know of any evidence that she hit that young man, if someone has it, please post it here. I do know that she damaged her fathers car and everything else that has been spoken of on the disappeared episode is in all liklihood true.

Regarding the phone call that her bf received a week later, that was not FROM the Red cross as someone here mentioned. It was traced to a pre-paid calling card DONATED from the Red Cross. There is a good chance that call was Maura.

I dont think the case will ever be solved. Perhaps one day her remains will be found.

The case really bothers me though.

Maybe someone did pick her up on the side of the road and she was killed or committed suicide somewhere else. I would be shocked if she went unnoticed in the area of the crash for this long.

Interesting case. Feel really bad for her family.

No I think she ran away as well, I am reading a blog that some guy is keeping all about her case, and to me I think she ran away. In the blog it mentions that she got a phone call while working the security desk for the college she attended, the supervisor was told that Maura was crying and upset, so she went to see what was wrong with her and saw her crying and in shock and she said all Maura said was my sister, Maura was caught using a stolen credit card and she also drank, I feel she was under a lot of pressure to get good grades to do her best etc. I think she just snapped and after the stolen credit card incident and crashing her dad's car, I feel she ranaway, but that doesn't explain the rag in the tailpipe, someone put that in there to stall her car.

I do not believe she ran away, but many do. I don't care if she was a cracked out hooker (regarding not being a saint) her family deserves to know how she met her end. And everyone deserves the police to investigate their case.

The rag in the tailpipe is disturbing. That dude that runs the blog has a shit ton of speculation on his site. I read the credit card report and it was actually kind of pitiful. It was a total of like $75 bucks for food delivered to her dorm. She took the number off a receipt she found on the floor. Yes indeed, it was theft, but she was never arrested for it and I do believe she paid restitution.

At the same time, what are the odds that a random abductor found her within those 10 minutes on such an isolated road? The Disappeared episode indicates she was an all-state cross country runner. I'd vote for her fleeing, but she couldn't have gotten far on $200 (minus all of the liquor she purchased...wtf was that about?) without someone helping her. My guess is that she left intentionally and was either A- abducted, B- started a new life, or C- died of exposure at some point in the woods. The dad mentioned that the glove they gave to the tracking dogs was new, so it's possible that they stopped picking up her scent because they just didn't have enough to go on.

As for the post that was made by "someone in the know", how come nothing in any story has been said about this supposed hit and run of UMass student Petrit Vasi? If there is such a person, and he was really the victim of a hit and run, it would lend credibility to the story.
Her father was supposedly visiting so he could get her a new (used) car and had $4000 in cash on him. A car was never bought, so it's possible he gave her the money to help her flee.

Someone else on the James Renner blog said something about what if she let a friend borrow the car and the friend (or sister) hit Petrit Vasi with Mauras car. Maybe that was the phone call that she got while she was at work that left her "catatonic". I feel like that it's a pretty intriguing coincidence. With her relationship failing, the stealing incident at West Point, the credit card fraud at UMass and getting kicked out of the nursing program, I feel like she would be in a perfect frame of mind to flee. I also feel like her dad had to have helped her or at least known about it. The night of the first car accident - why would she leave that party and head to her dad's hotel room at 2:30 AM??? When she could have easily walked herself to her dorm? She had been drinking so that seems pretty risky. How did she get into her dad's hotel room? I guess she could have had a key, but I think it's strange that she chose to go there instead of back to her dorm room. Also with the father claiming to have had something to do with the rag in the tailpipe, he clearly knows something.

I think, and hope, she's still alive.

I found some old articles about the Petrit Vasi hit-and-run. These are from a local college paper back in the day. A couple of fellow students also suffered hit-and-run accidents, so it wasn't entirely unusual at the time. Indeed, Maura was apparently at work at the time, where there were two supervisors making the rounds, so getting out even for a breather would have been hard to get away with. Some speculate she let someone borrow her vehicle, which would certainly have been possibly more upsetting than doing it herself, if the person was unlicensed and she was not insured for another person to use her car, then the idiot went and got drunk him/herself.

The only odd detail is that Vasi's wallet was empty, but he claimed he seldom carried cash, etc., even when socializing at a bar. Which seems weird unless he was so popular people kept buying for him! Since he was actually hit some distance from the nearest taverns, I wonder if he also partied at someone's apartment or dorm nearby, thus getting free drinks and putting him in that intersection.

As of earlier this year, Vasi still has no memory and claims no prior connection to Maura Murray before the accident, which is likely true. I think the people she knew would have recalled if she had another acquaintance with the only name of its kind in the USA.

Maybe it's just me, but what's the point of buying the book, when all the material (including some of the even more interesting comments) is available online, and gets updated frequently? This Renner is obsessed--- aren't we all?
