I hated that show as a kid (also hated the Dean Martin Roasts). Now I'm fascinated by shows like them. To see all those great ones, now gone, in their prime is mesmerizing.
    Great post johnny!

that's what i love about it.
we just don't get those kind of shows anymore.
and -to be a little corny- you could actually sit with the family and watch it. the suggestive stuff by a master like paul lynde was at a level that the adults could catch it and the kids were oblivious.

I love Hollywood Squares. I have only seen 2 episodes, because I wasn't around when it was on. I have written a fan letter to Peter Marshall, and he sent me an autographed copy of his book.

His son played major league baseball for the Cubs. His name was Pete LeCock.
As Casey Stengel would say, 'you can look it up'

Wasn't Peter Marshall's sister Joanne Dru?

I loved that show when I was a kid. Paul Lynde was really the first gay person I knew about in my childhood. Mom explained it to me this way "he likes men the way Mommy and Daddy like each other." So simple, I got it.

and -better yet- learned that it was a normal thing for some adults.

Once I got it; then it wasn't very difficult to understand why my grandmother's best friend from childhood (male) who went to LA to become an actor and as I child I'd ask where his wife was; he would say well I have a lady friend. Still so taboo in those days!

^^I didn't figure out till much later that Paul was gay, looking back at the show now I must have been oh so sheltered as a kid.

Also: Ummm... johnny... Marshall's son the baseball player ...his name is LaCock, not LeCock. You really need to get your Cocks straight, especially when one is named Peter.

I saw a documentary that stated unequivocally that the punchlines from the "stars" in the squares were mostly scripted ahead of time. They singled out Paul Lynde as the one with the most rehearsed lines written by the shows writers, stating that his "improvisation" was adding his PL schtick to jokes that he had nothing to do with other than memorizing them.

London, it is against the rules to post one right after another post in less than 30 minutes. Please combine the second post with the first. If you don't know how to this, there are instructions here https://cindyrtapia.wixsite.com/foru...ultitquoting-1

Some of those shows were not bad back in the day. Watching now, it's corny old vaudeville shtick.
Today you could be standing next to someone who is trying their best not to fall apart. So whatever you do today, do it with kindness.
