Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like we're about to hear that the Reichstag has been burned down?

    Nationalist?
No surprise there - some of the best known dictators and despot wannabe's have been Nationalists.

But in this case it doesn't matter.

Trump is no more a Nationalist than he is a conservative or a Christian.
He's merely the most ardent worshiper at the altar of Trump, with no guiding philosophy outside of "Me".

It's just a label to toss around because he thinks the already duped will be further duped into thinking it's a statement of patriotism; and all indications are that they will be.

I am teaching Oedipus the King tonight, and something really struck me about this mythical TYRANT. Does the following remind you of anybody?

"I know you are all sick, yet there is not one of you, sick though you are, that is as sick as I myself."
    Sincerely yours,

He is relating to the people in this quote. Though they suffer, he feels their pain because he suffers as well. Somehow I don't think that is what you were going for.

Read a thingy on FB that said (paraphrased): "No one has a stone to cast against Trump." (Because no one is without sin). Buuut, I guess it's okay for repubs to cast stones at dems. It went on to say that Trump wasn't perfect, but he was perfect for the job. Barf. He could kill someone, and his supporters would have a ready word of support, slap him on the back, and hee haw.

Thank You for pointing this all out because Trump only cares about
    himself and Ivanka.

I'm not sure about the Ivanka part.

Yet they can't see it - everybody else is wrong about him.

I'll be out of town on election day.
I'm going to the courthouse tomorrow to cast an absentee ballot.

I've been know to vote a straight party line in several elections.
I'll be doing that again - but it's the first time I'll be voting for Democrats.

Anyone belonging to the party that supports this guy needs to be cast out, they aren't fit for public service and are worthy only of condemnation.

I'm in the printing and mailing business - I've mailed probably 3 million pieces of political mail over the last three or four weeks.
The common thread with the Republican candidates is that they tout their integrity, their honesty, their support for Christian and family values, and their support for Trump so that he can make America great again.

    WTF?

Anyone so intellectually dishonest and flawed as to be able to connect those disparate dots is not someone I could ever vote for - they lack integrity, credibility, honesty and old-fashioned good sense.

Back before Trump, when people told lies they tried to at least make them somewhat believable, that's not necessary any more - his followers will believe anything; which is what got him elected in the first place.

    Naturally.
    Would you expect anything else.

I would - a good, old-fashioned, political rally right in front of the synagogue - he can rally his faithful and and spew more of his BS.
He has to do that pretty often after all, that's one of the responsibilities when leading a cult.
For a lot of those people it either bears repeating, or it's like the first time they've ever heard it; every time they hear it.

Bonespur is already trying to explain away what might be bad Midterm results on Tuesday.

Says "two maniacs" stopped Republicans' momentum.

Obviously could have more accurately called them "two of my supporters, who also happen to be maniacs."

Sooo, I read friend's post dissing Abrams. Sooooo I replied: Why is it wrong to cast stones at Trump but not at Abrams. (((Crickets)))) I'm going to continue asking that every time someone "throws a stone" at liberals. Because it pisses me off.

    That would be redundant.
He could have just stopped with, "two of my supporters".

Or maybe, "two of my supporters who seem to be action-oriented literalists".

It's likely to get worse now that the fringe has a national political party to call home and a president who represents, normalizes and encourages them.
If the synagogue shooter had been killed during the attack, Trump and his Fringe Party might have lost a supporter, but they would have found their Horst Wessel.

He doesn't have to be sneaky, clever, or truthful.
His supporters don't care about any of that, and those of us not already fooled by him never will be; no matter how sneaky or clever he might become.
Truthfulness has no place in discussions of Trump so it's never going to be a factor.

Dems Take House, Breaking GOPs Total Control of House

WASHINGTON - Democrats took control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday night, a victory that will transform a Republican-controlled chamber that supported and protected President Donald Trump into a legislative body ready to challenge and investigate him.

I'm feeling a bit of relief tonite, for those who have been racially targeted lately, those who may be lgbtq, those of us on social security/medicare/medicaid, women of the #metoo movement. I know we have a long road ahead, but I'm feeling a bit of relief.

    I'm not.
Too many people are still responding to appeals to fear and hatred - base emotions - as if what's good for one can only come at the expense of another.

I'm pleased that the polling was mostly accurate (as opposed to 2016), and the Democrats actually DID take the House as per forecast. Remains to be seen how big the margin is. I would love it if they could get to 230.

Of course this feeling is somewhat dampened by the knowledge that my fellow Tennesseans elected that Bonespur hand-puppet Marsha Blackburn. I looked at it county by county, and unless it was an "urban" area she mostly got over 70%. What a state I live in.

Which will cause the (D)'s to lose the House in 2020. People want Congress to address their issues NOT investigation, investigation, investigation. I want health care, not investigations. I want us out of the wars, not investigation.

If the (D)'s pick Pelosi and spend two years doing nothing but wasting millions on investigations, they lose again in 2020.

And the people in my state are voting for Republicans who can't seem to dredge up anything more to offer by way of qualification than that they support Trump, and that they too want to Make America Great Again; while saying that their Dem opponents favor unregulated immigration and abortion.

Oh, and also that the Dems lie while they believe in honesty, integrity and fairness to all.

Jim Acosta of CNN got his credntials taken away because he dared to challenge Bonespur at his press conference. First it was Megyn Kelly; now he can't bear to be in the same room as a scary ol' CNN reporter. As Bill Maher so aptly put it, what a whiny little bitch!

Was that while he was looking at the map with those other guys? It didn't have CC, but I was quite curious about how deep he would step in it.

Stop complicating this whole climate issue with science and such.
Just rake the forest, then go back inside and turn on the danged AC or heat as the seasons might require - problem solved.

Everybody wants to get all geeky about this stuff when the solution to global warming is already right at our fingertips.
    It's called a "thermostat".

Besides, "scientists" keep changing their stories every time new information or better tools become available; and that creates a credibility issue.

Obviously, I'm no fan of Scientology.

Today in MS, we go to the polls in a run-off election pitting Democrat Mike Espy against Donald Trump.

Well, it's Trump in the guise of Cindy Hyde-Smith - maybe you've heard the name.
She's been in the news lately for using an "exaggerated expression of regard" (her words) for a supporter by saying that if he invited her to a public hanging, she'd be in the front row. Gee, who in MS could possibly be offended by using a public hanging as an example of regard?

Oh yeah, she was also filmed telling college-aged supporters that there were "certain people" who we did not want to vote and that making it "just a little harder" for them to do so was a "great idea".

She referenced people who attend those "other schools" as an example; but we're all sure that she wasn't referring to the seven historically black universities in MS. Besides, she says that she was just joking all along; and everybody knows - it's a true fact - voter suppression and lynching are a thing of the distant past in MS. Well; the past anyway - nobody has been lynched here or denied the right to vote in several years now; so the people making a big deal about her humorous comments just need to STFU and let bygones be bygones in the interests of Making America Great Again.

I guess next, they'll be making some kind of big deal about the nooses that appeared in trees at the state Capitol yesterday morning.
    And the hate-mongering signs, too.

These people obviously just can't take a joke.
They should try to get some professional help for their emotional hyper-sensitivity and lack of humor.

I received several mailings from the Smith campaign.
They always have pictures of her with Trump, just like her campaign bus does.
They pretty much just point out that she supports Trump on every issue, even before he says anything about the issue; she supports Trump. She supports him so much, that he flew to MS yesterday and attended two rallies here to try to help her get her foot out of her mouth in front of adoring crowds.

I don't have a clue what she might actually think for herself (if she does at all); but I'm thinking that she will likely come down on the Trump-side of every issue; and that's enough information for me.

Sadly, she will likely win pretty easily; I'm surprised that it's come to a run off.
Pretty much the only reason it has is that another Republican candidate drew about 25% of the vote away from her in the general election; and those people aren't likely to vote for a Democrat after supporting a candidate who was even more objectionable than Smith.

So I'm off to the polls on my way to work this morning, we'll see how things go...

I am familiar with her in the way a non-Mississippian would be. I could see her and Tennessee's own Marsha Blackburn going out to Sunday brunch together, and afterwards maybe going out to burn a cross in somebody's yard.

I have been reading some about the race, but am not as personally invested in the outcome as you are, I suppose. I am more looking at it from the perspective of wanting the GOP to have 52 Senators instead of 53.

But thank you for casting your ballot in the right direction. We shall see...
    Sincerely yours,

Polls have been closed since 7:00, about 30% of the vote is in and she's leading 56% to 44%.
Three weeks ago everybody expected it to be a blowout in her favor, she managed to get some voters concerned with her comments about public hangings, vote suppression and such. That's why Trump flew in for two rallies with her yesterday.

It's practically unthinkable that she might lose, this is a deeply conservative, pro-Trump state.
On top of that, her opponent happens to be a black guy who was also Secretary of Agriculture under Bill Clinton; so there's some lingering resentment among conservatives there. He's also got a skeleton or two in his closet, it's said.

When Hyde-Smith accused him of "twisting her words" (about the hanging comment) during a debate, he replied that her words were spoken and recorded live - nobody twisted them. He said, "We don't know what's in your heart, but we all heard what came out of your mouth".

Yeah - we'll soon see, but it's pretty much a given that she's going to win.

    And so Trump-as-Smith won, sadly.
He beat Espy by about 55% to 45%, as expected.

The double-time march away from human progress continues.

But on a bright note, Trump has solved the environmental crisis and ensured the sustainability of the planet for the rest of his lifetime, simply by noticing that the environment is just fine where he is; thus exposing the attempted deception by qualified scientists, who although they might be experts on environmental matters and data-proven trends; know absolutely nothing about running a profitable gas, oil or coal company.

If I were Cohen, I'd decline any all expense paid trips to Saudi Arabia for the foreseeable future.

    This article is awesome.

My favorite quote: "We found that support for Trump in the 2016 election was higher in areas that had more searches for topics such as 'erectile dysfunction.'"

I suggest making t-shirts: "Voting for Trump: The Next Best Thing to Being Able to Get an Erection."

Maybe, but I suspect that fractured rationality plays the bigger role.

Or maybe just old-fashioned regressive thinking and sentiments.

    Geeze, people who support Trump:

Here's a guy who says that the free press is our enemy, totalitarian dictators are some pretty OK guys, and that we ought to have a state-run media so that we can get truthful reporting.

WTF else do you need to know about the guy?

He's yanking the hell out of your chains on purpose to see how bloody crazily objectionable he can become before you get an inkling that he's being objectionable; and you just cheer him on.

It's the damnedest thing I've ever seen; and I think if I saw Bigfoot carrying a smiling and waving Ronald Reagan down the aisles at Home Depot; it would seem less odd than what I see coming from you guys.

If he starts wearing his underwear on the outside you'll no doubt reevaluate your sense of style; and if he starts speaking in imaginary languages; you'll claim to understand and support everything he says.

And there will be agreement among you followers that he's making perfect sense.

Continued support for the guy in the face of his lunacy is far more perplexing than having voted for him in the first place.

We have seen it before. I don't know why I feel I need to note that I DO NOT support Trump. He's a buffoon. I did NOT and will NOT vote for him but as far as the press goes, Obama wire-tapped the White House press staff. I do have a point.

Perhaps there is no one more familiar with the strong-armed tactics of the U.S. national-security establishment than James Risen, the long-serving New York Times reporter who’s now with the Intercept. In a well-documented saga, Risen fought a seven-year court battle against government attempts to compel his testimony in a leak case against ex-CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling. Though the government won the case against Sterling, it didn’t ultimately force Risen’s testimony.Even so, Risen had experienced firsthand the Obama administration’s scorched-earth stance on leaks. Weeks before President Barack Obama was to leave office, Risen wrote in the Times, “If Donald J. Trump decides as president to throw a whistle-blower in jail for trying to talk to a reporter, or gets the F.B.I. to spy on a journalist, he will have one man to thank for bequeathing him such expansive power: Barack Obama.”

We were armed the terrorists that ended up using those arms against our soldiers. (just one article out of many I could post)

Obama was awarded the lie of the year twice by the Washington Post.

My point is, everything we have seen out of Trump we have seen before. You can NOT expect others to do what you will not do. Many of those who demand accountability out of Trump refused to hold Obama accountable for anything. They still clamor for him to be president.

I will also note, anything you excuse from one person will only get worse with the next. The (D)'s putting Pelosi back in power makes it far more likely that Trump or another (R) wins again.

Attempts to draw a comparison between Bonespur and ANY other American President are humorous to me.

It's this kind of fuzzy thinking that leads to nonsense like voting for third party candidates.
