Last week (I think it was Thursday) John Babcock, Canada's last remaining veteran of the Great War passed away, at the grand old age of 109.
The problem is Babcock wasn't really Canadian at all. He's American.
Oh, he was born here alright, near Kingston, and joined the Canadian Army. But he was 15 at the time, and he never even made it overeas, let alone saw any action.
This guy - and I don't mean to belittle him, or his sacrifice - moved to the US in 1921!
Anyway, the Canadian government offered to have a state funeral for him but was turned down by the family, which makes sense.
Here's a pic of him getting some kind of an award from the Canadian government last year. Looks thrilled, doesn't he? I'd say he's thinking "Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just gimme the dam plaque and wheel me back on a plane to Seattle..."
