    Ed Wood

Ed's not the textbook example of a 'bigwig' but I figured this place needed an Ed thread.

Here are a few shots of the apartment building on Yucca & Cahuenga that Eddie lived in during his last years.

I took these shots in '95--very scary house and hood:

I think that Ed and his wife Cathy lived in one of the apartments toward the back facing the adjacent 7/11. I actually got the nerve to walk inside and take a look and it was awful. Squishy wet carpet in the halls and lots of noise. I didn't stay long.

In transition (swiped from Scott's Ed page):

Here's a pic I took last year of the old place. Now a retirement home(?), it can also be seen on Scott's DVD if memory serves)

Glad to see Ed Wood mentioned. Remember the Golden Turkey
Award books? I first saw "Plan 9 From Outer Space" on TBS
in 1980 and have been an Ed fan every since.

Every year I watch the "Ed Wood" movie in
salute to Ed and of course Bela.

    Cheers,
    Doug

Ed Wood also wrote books-I never have read one of them though. Always wanted to though.

Wow, the place looks better now. I remember reading on FAD that Scott wouln't go back there (to that neighborhood). You couln't pay him. Thanks for being so brave and getting those shots. Ed was a sad, strange man. His love for wearing women's clothing came from his mom during his childhood. Apparently she wasnted a daughter. I think that was the beginning.

He had a big angora fetish!

He blames his mom he said his mom always wanted a girl and dressed him in girlie clothes...it became a habit.

I beleive he was in the battle of Tarawa during world war II. It was a very bloody battle and only 400 came out alive!

He also used to hand make his christmas cards every year!

He wasn't gay...just liked wearing womens clothes.

IF you see "Glen or Glenda" even though his name isn't in the credit's it is indeed him playing glen/glenda!!

Some lines from "Glen or Glenda" by Bela:

    "People, all going somewhere" Duh
"he eats little boys and puppy dog tails"
"Pull the string, Pull the string"

    I could go on....

The part were Bela was cussing though I hear isn't really true. He didn't use those kind of words...also he was married at the time of his death to a Hope linneger. I think I spelled the last name right?

From what I can gather she was a big fan of Lugosi's who wrote him when he was in the hospital for drug addiction starting each note with "A dash of hope."

From what I also read she was really mean to him!!

    Bela didn't deserve that!!!

That would be interesting. And when you think about him and Lugosi they both would be surprised how famous they are now.

Hell Ed died broke but if he was alive he could rake in money today with how famous he was. His wife Kathy just died recently!

Some of my favorite lines in all moviedom are in the movie, Ed Wood...

"Let's shoot this fucker!" Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau)

"Well, I see the usual cast of fags, drug addicts, and losers are here." Dolores Fuller (Sarah Jessica Parker)

"Welcome to the fold brother. Welcome. Praise the lord, brother. Do you reject Satan and all his evils?" Rev Lemon.... "Sure." Bunny Breckenridge (Bill Murray)

The funniest lines in that movie are delivered by Landau and Murray....

Admittedly, this movie is the extent to which I have been exposed to Ed Wood, besides "Plan 9"... I like to think that it is a fair portrayal of his life, but who knows???

    Love it!!

"The police .. we have no permit .. RUN!"

Awesome flick and whatever the facts on Bela, Landau earned the *hell* out of that Oscar. His detox scene moved me to tears, and I don't tear easily.

I don't know if you all remember those Sex education corresondenced shool ads in the magazines in the 1970's but Ed Wood wrote and directed them.

They were a series of 12 super 8 films approx. 20 minutes each!

    with Manuals!!

Dang I just checked youtube no luck on finding any videos!!!

By 1975, you couldn't reach Ed after six p.m., because he and Kathy would go to sleep by then. He got so he didn't want to take a bath in his last years as well.

I am sure him writing Porn was really a low blow for ed?

Nightmare of Ecstasy is an excellent read. I read it five times.

Ed was so sad in his last years. It's such a fucking shame he passed as early as he did. He would have been so proud at what an impact his work has had on our society. I admire him so much. I would kill for a Ed Wood autograph!

Porn? He wrote porn? I never knew that.

Even if you're not familiar with Ed Wood you really must see the movie. It's hilarious (and at times sad.)

Here is a link to an interesting interview with Ed Wood's former girlfriend Delores Fuller (played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the movie). She had some interesting things to say about Sarah Jessica Parker, LOL

I don't know if I mentioned this in his story, but I watched the film Pretty Models All in a Row - written by and starring ED. Nasty ho girls with scabby legs having interviews with Ed as a producer, of course he beds them all himself. Over weight, in nasty underwear. Really a repulsive flick.

in reference to scott's commentary above over the 'nasty ho girls' i notice that there is a segment in 'glen or glenda' where it totally goes off in all directions, women dancing, the devil vamping some woman on the couch, it goes on and on, and i notice that all the women in that section look so gross LMAO they look dirty, or slovenly or something. LMAO too weird, one of my favorite bits of hollywood history the ed wood/ bela days. what i wouldn't have loved to visit bela and talk with him!!! to think he lived in obscurity during the time of my early childhood. living in los angeles in the fifties, what days those were! bela and ed rule!
