Old $1,000 bills help nab robbers
TEXAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Banks don't see many $1,000 bills these days. The U.S. Treasury stopped printing them in 1945.
So an Alabama bank alerted police when an 18-year-old Michigan man sought change Thursday for an antique $1,000 bill, and officers arrested him and two 15-year-old companions.
The Kalamazoo County, Mich., sheriff's department says the three stole a safe containing antique money from one youth's parents.
The Kalamazoo Gazette and the Birmingham News say they drove a stolen van to Birmingham, Ala., where the older suspect presented the $1,000 bill at a Service First Bank branch.
The three remained in custody Tuesday in Birmingham awaiting return to Michigan. They're from Texas Township, Mich.
